General

Can I buy a car as a private buyer?
Of course, you can. SETM exports even 1 car (Our Service). Please check import legislation in your country before placing an order.

How much commission will I have to pay SETM?
SETM’s commission varies depending on the price of the car you buy.
Car price SETM commission
JPY1,000,000 or less JPY50,000/car (≒USD455 @JPY110/USD)
JPY1,000,001 or more 5% of the car price

I don’t have a fax machine, but can I still deal with you?
No problem. Basically, we send you scanned documents via email. Please check your email regularly so as not to miss information and delay the proceeding of your deal.

Do you provide any warranty for vehicles you sell?
No, we don’t provide any warranty. However, vehicles are required to pass a strict inspection before being auctioned at Auto Auction, and therefore it is fair to say vehicles listed on the auction are more reliable in terms of quality and information disclosure, than vehicles sold by conventional dealers (For further details, see (About Auto Auction)). Moreover, we offer an inspection on quality by JAAI for a charge according to your request or needs (JAAI: Japan Auto Appraisal Institute).

I live in Japan. Can I use SETM service?
Of course, you can. We will locate your requested car and deliver it wherever you live in Japan.

Do you provide an inspection of vehicles before export if requested?
We can offer a car inspection by JAAI for extra charge (JAAI: Japan Auto Appraisal Institute). For some countries which require an inspection of vehicles before import, we have vehicles inspected at JAAI. After the vehicle passes the inspection, certificate of inspection will be given. Can I buy car parts from SETM?
Yes, you can. It is also possible to deliver your purchased car with the parts loaded on it. We welcome requests for parts from parts buyer, and if you want to have used car parts imported in containers, please feel free to contact with us.

What are SETM’s trading terms?
Basically we use FOB. However, C&F (=CFR) and CIF are also available with your payment of freight and marine insurance. In the case of FOB and C&F, we recommend you insure your car against risks on the sea because the responsibility for the cargo is transferred from SETM to an importer (you) when your car is loaded on a vessel at ports in Japan.

Order/Cancel/Claim

Can I cancel my order?
You can cancel your order only before we buy your car at the auction, and we return all of your deposit (Banking charge will need to be borne by you). However, please note that if you cancel your order after we buy your car, we receive all deposit as a cancellation fee.

Can I return a car I bought?
No. we don’t accept request of return. However, if you should receive a car which is significantly different from your order (types, colors, model year, etc), please contact us immediately.

Payment

What kind of costs will be required to import a used car from Japan?
The main costs are as follows:
  • Price of your car
  • Inland transportation/Custom clearance/Courier/Banking charge
  • Freight
  • Other costs incurred due to your request or needs (Car inspection, etc)

What are SETM’s payment terms?
Auto Auction
After you place an order, you will be requested to remit 50% of the quotation (FOB price) as deposit within 3 working days by TT (Telegraphic Transfer) to our bank account with a note of “deposit,” and notify us by email or fax. Then, after we bid successfully, we will issue an invoice for the balance and you will have to pay the balance within 3 working days by TT. Available currencies are Japanese Yen or U.S. dollar. Car for sale by owners
You will have to pay the whole amount of the invoice within 3 working days by TT. For further details, see(How to buy: For sale by owners).

Where should I send payment?

Do you accept payment by credit card or Paypal?
No. We don’t accept payment by credit card, Paypal and so on. Only bank remittance (TT) is acceptable.

Do you accept payment by L/C (Letter of Credit)?
In principle, we accept only payment by TT. L/C could be acceptable according to the situation, but an extra charge (including bank commission) will be added. If you are thinking of dealing by L/C, please feel free to contact us at first. (Contact Us).

Can I pay in foreign currencies?
Currently, only Japanese Yen or U.S. dollar are available.

How do you calculate exchange rate?
We use exchange rates that our advising bank provides.

Do you offer business on credit?
No. Business on credit is not available.

Shipping

How much is the freight?
Freight information is listed by country and by type of vehicles at (Freight). Please note that they are just rates for reference.

Can I insure my shipment?
Yes, You can. You will have to pay for insurance premium, but we recommend you insure your car on the sea as you will be responsible for risks of the cargo after shipment. We can arrange a marine insurance if you need.

How long is the lead time for shipping?
Although it varies depending on the destination, it roughly takes about 3 - 5 weeks after a vessel leaves Japan. We will inform you ETD (Estimated Time of Departure), ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) and so on.
